Early beliefs of the Salvation Army were influenced by a book Helps to Holiness,  which was to influence spiritual life of the Army for a generation. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Salvation army, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

Such activity is chosen behaviour and is thus a matter of the will. It is therefore able to be directed or restrained in the same way heterosexual urges are controlled. Homosexual practice would render any person ineligible for full membership soldiership in the Army.
